The Stewart Community was named after May L. Stewart, a faculty member at UW Oshkosh from 1926-1960. Stewart received her master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1923. During her 34 years at UW Oshkosh, she was the supervisor of student teaching in the Division of Rural Education. She traveled abroad to observe rural education in Mexico, Canada, Europe and South America. Stewart lived her life philosophy of: “A successful person is one who can leave every place a little better than they found it." Stewart died on December 13, 1965, the evening the Stewart Community was dedicated. |
